IPL Giant Signals Interest in Acquiring Stakes if ECB Expands Competition
Kolkata Knight Riders Group (KRG) has thrown its hat in the ring for potential expansion opportunities in The Hundred, signaling that the Indian Premier League powerhouse would be willing to acquire stakes in new franchises if the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decides to grow the competition beyond its current eight-team format.
The development comes as the franchise cricket landscape continues to evolve globally, with established IPL owners looking to diversify their portfolios across multiple T20 leagues. KRG's renewed interest represents a significant indication of confidence in The Hundred's growth trajectory and commercial potential.
A Failed Bid Doesn't Deter KRG
KRG's interest in The Hundred is not entirely new. The franchise group was actively involved in the bidding process during the ECB's stake auction last year, when franchises opened up for investment. At that time, KRG was in serious contention for Trent Rockets, one of the eight established franchises.
However, the negotiations didn't materialize. According to sources, senior KRG officials made the strategic decision to withdraw from the bidding after concluding that the franchise valuations were slightly inflated. While other investors moved forward, KRG chose to step back rather than overpay for equity in the competition.
The eventual buyer of a 49% stake in Trent Rockets was Cain International, the investment firm co-founded by Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly and British businessman Jonathan Goldstein, who secured the deal for just under £40 million.
Expansion Could Change the Calculus
Despite their previous exit, KRG's calculus would shift dramatically if The Hundred expands from eight to ten franchises. The franchise group has expressed willingness to return to the negotiating table if the ECB greenlights expansion plans.
Such a move would be strategically significant for both parties. For the ECB, KRG's involvement would inject another heavyweight bidder with deep IPL connections and proven cricket franchise expertise. For KRG, entering The Hundred would extend their already impressive global portfolio.
WHERE COULD NEW TEAMS EMERGE?
Earlier reports have floated two potential locations for new Hundred franchises:
Durham — A historic cricket county that could serve as a strong market
South West England — Potentially based in Bristol or Taunton, tapping into underserved regions
Both locations would add geographic diversity to The Hundred and could tap into new fan bases across England.
TIMELINE: PATIENCE REQUIRED
However, those waiting for immediate expansion will need to temper expectations. The Hundred is unlikely to increase the number of franchises before the current media rights cycle concludes at the end of 2028. The competition's broadcasters have contracted terms through 2028, and major structural changes typically align with media rights negotiations.
That said, expansion could become reality from 2029 onward. Adding two teams and generating more fixtures could significantly increase the value of the next broadcast rights deal—a compelling incentive for the ECB to pursue growth.
THE IPL CONNECTION IS ALREADY STRONG
It's worth noting that IPL ownership already has a strong foothold in The Hundred. Four of the eight franchises are owned or part-owned by groups with direct IPL links:
Sunrisers Leeds — Connected to the Sunrisers franchise family
Manchester Super Giants — IPL-backed ownership
MI London — Part of the Mumbai Indians ecosystem
Southern Brave — IPL-connected investors
KRG's entry would strengthen this trend, further intertwining the two premier T20 leagues.
KRG'S IMPRESSIVE GLOBAL FOOTPRINT
Kolkata Knight Riders Group boasts one of the most extensive franchise cricket portfolios globally. Beyond their flagship IPL team in Kolkata, KRG operates franchises across:
India — IPL (Kolkata Knight Riders)
Caribbean — CPL presence
UAE — T20 League involvement
United States — Major League Cricket stakes
This diversified portfolio demonstrates KRG's commitment to building a global cricket empire, making their interest in The Hundred a natural extension of their strategy.
WHAT'S NEXT?
For now, all eyes remain on the ECB and their expansion timeline. While 2029 may seem distant, the groundwork for expansion is already being laid. KRG's public interest signals confidence among major cricket investors that The Hundred's growth story is far from over.
Whether Durham and a south west franchise ultimately materialize remains to be seen, but with established IPL power backing potential expansion, the pieces are beginning to fall into place for The Hundred's next chapter.
